VATICAN CITY--The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI will meet with two leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland on Friday to discuss a report charging that the church covered up clerical child abuse for decades.

A statement Monday says Benedict will meet with Irish bishops conference president Cardinal Sean Brady and Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to discuss the "painful situation" for the church following the report's release.

The statement says other Vatican officials and the papal envoy to Ireland will also take part in the talks.

The report issued last month after a government-ordered investigation found that church leaders in the Dublin Archdiocese failed to inform authorities about sexual abuse by priests.
