Ireland--FOREIGN Minister Micheal Martin has asked Papal Nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza to meet with him to discuss issues surrounding the Murphy commission report into the Dublin Archdiocese.

This Irish Independent has learned that the meeting is to take place early next week. Archbishop Leanza ignored two letters from the inquiry when it was compiling its report into the handling of clerical child sex abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

The high-ranking diplomat, who was appointed by Pope Benedict to represent the interests of the Holy See in Ireland, ignored a letter which requested him to forward all documents that had not been produced by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin.

It has emerged that Archbishop Leanza called, at his own request last Tuesday, on the secretary-general of the Department of Foreign Affairs, David Cooney.

The Government was last night urged to bring the papal nuncio before a Dail committee to explain why he ignored information requests from the Murphy commission.

The ministerial meeting will take place next Tuesday, less than 24 hours before the Irish Bishops Conference meets for the first time since the publication of the shocking report.

The Irish Independent has also learned that gardai investigating whether criminal charges should be brought against those involved in the cover-up of child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese may seek access to files held by the Dublin commission.

Evidence obtained by the commission cannot be used against any person in criminal or other proceedings, leading to speculation that its vast documentation may be destroyed.

But gardai have not ruled out the possibility of requesting access to material to further their investigation into the potential criminal liability of individuals identified in the 720- page report. Circuit Court judge Yvonne Murray found widespread evidence of a cover-up by the Catholic Church.
