Laypeople Form Council to Increase Say in Roman Catholic Church in Cape Breton Amherst Daily November 16, 2009 http://www.amherstdaily.com/index.cfm?sid=303123&sc=508 SYDNEY, N.S. — Roman Catholic priests in the Sydney area have authorized a new council that will give laypeople more responsibility in various ministries. Pat Bates, a layperson and member of the organizing committee, said the Deanery Pastoral Council will also increase the role of women in the church by including a policy that half the council members must be female. Bates says the laypeople in the parish "want equality for women." He says the idea of forming a council for non-ordained church members was spurred by concerns within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antigonish, including child pornography charges against Bishop Raymond Lahey. |
