Father Peter Williamdwyer Armidale Nsw, Formerly of St Stanislaus College, Bathurst Broken Rites November 8, 2009 http://brokenrites.alphalink.com.au/nletter/page171-dwyer.html Peter Willam Dwyer was a student of St Stanislaus College, Bathurst, New South Wales, in the late 1950s. He later became a religious Brother in the Vincentian order and taught at St Stanislaus College (with qualifications in music) before becoming the college's president in 1980. A St Stanislaus yearbook says that Dwyer was on the college staff for 21 years until he left at the end of 1992 "for two years' study leave". By about 1997, Peter Dwyer had become ordained as a priest of the Armidale diocese in north-western New South Wales. He was listed as a priest for the first time in the 1998 edition of the Directory of Australian Catholic Clergy -- as an assistant priest at St Nicholas's parish, Tamworth, in the Armidale diocese. In the 2002 edition, Father Peter Dwyer was still listed as belonging to the Armidale diocese but was "working outside the diocese" — he was one of three priests listed at the Good Shepherd Seminary, 50 Abbotsford Road, Homebush in Sydney, where he was director of first-year students. A first-year student at the Homebush seminary, James McCarthy, wrote an article ("Reflections: Seminary - a changing experience"), published in Sydney's Catholic Weekly in 2002. The student said: "Life at the seminary has been the most enjoyable time of my life. The new rector, Fr Julian Porteous, has settled in, as have other new staff, including Fr Joseph Vnuk OP, Dean of Studies, and Fr Peter Dwyer. Fr Dwyer, a priest of the Armidale diocese and former principal of St Stanislaus in Bathurst, is the director of the new first year program. . ." In late 2007, Fr Peter Dwyer moved back to Armidale diocese, where he took up residence at the Cathedral Presbytery in Dangar Street, Armidale. The website of the Cathedral Parish of Saints Mary & Joseph in Armidale (when we checked it on 4 September 2008) said: "The [Cathedral] Parish team is headed by Bishop Luc J. Matthys, D.D., Monsignor Edward (Ted) Wilkes (Adminstrator) and Fr. Peter Dwyer." |
