Gauteng Legislature to Tackle Central Methodist Church Crisis By Micel Schnehage Eyewitness News November 6, 2009 http://www.eyewitnessnews.co.za/articleprog.aspx?id=25690 The Gauteng Legislature is to hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday to discuss the crisis at the Central Methodist Church. The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Social Development and Health visited the facility a week ago, recommending that it be closed down. Around 3000 people, mostly Zimbabwean refuge seekers, are being housed there. The portfolio committee says the church is a health and fire hazard. The facility in downtown Johannesburg has caused a stir in recent months with allegations of sexual and other abuse of minors, mostly Zimbabweans taking refuge there. There have also been claims the church has become a safe haven for criminals. It is understood the mission’s custodian Paul Verryn will not attend the meeting. |
