BOULDER — Prosecutors on Monday afternoon filed 11 felony charges against a former Longmont man accused of using his position at a local church to meet and entice boys into sexual relationships.

Bradley Boda was a popular counselor at Fort Collins' Rocky Mountain High School when police arrested him at his parents' Greeley home in September.

Prosecutors filed a charge of sexual assault with a pattern of abuse, two counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, two counts of sexual assault on a child, three counts of sexual exploitation of children, two counts of criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of children, and sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust with a pattern of abuse.

Boda is due to return to court Jan. 21 for a preliminary hearing. He waived his right to the hearing within 30 days because his attorney said they wanted to have him evaluated. Boda is out of jail on a $50,000 bond.

Boulder District Judge David Archuleta on Monday also declined a defense motion to allow Boda to interact with nieces and nephews on the phone or during supervised visits.

"That is simply too great a risk for the court to take," Archuleta said.

Longmont police in November 2008 started investigating Boda's relationship with boys as young as 11 at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Longmont while he served as a volunteer and youth director between 1991 and 2004.

A tip led police to a man who told detectives he had a sexual relationship with Boda. Investigators said four men told them they had sexual relationships or encounters with Boda when they were young teens.

According to Boda' arrest warrant affidavit, the sexual encounters happened in the church, on church trips and at the children's homes. Detectives believe he used pornographic videos, magazines and sexual props to entice boys into encounters and told them that masturbating together and having homosexual thoughts was normal.

One man told investigators he had a yearlong relationship with Boda starting when he was 13. Another told police he had encounters with Boda from the time he was 13 until he was 17.

Prosecutor Adrian Van Nice said Longmont police received additional tips about Boda's behavior with children, but the callers were referred to Larimer County as the proper jurisdiction in those cases. That was in response to Boda's defense attorney, who said an extensive investigation was unable to turn up any recent victims.
