The Archdiocese of Miami has prohibited the Legionaries of Christ from functioning in any capacity in the archdiocese.

“In the past, their priests were given individual approval by the Vicar General each time they wished to come to the Archdiocese of Miami but their ministry was restricted to their own members,” said archdiocesan chancellor Msgr. Michael Souckar in an October 29 memo to all priests. “Because the Legionaries of Christ have not abided by these restrictions, Archbishop [John] Favalora has barred them from any ministry in the Archdiocese of Miami.”

“In addition, Regnum Christi”-- the lay movement associated with the Legionaries of Christ-- “is not nor has it ever been approved to work in any parish, school, or other Archdiocesan entity,” he continued. “It recently has been discovered that Regnum Christi has been involved in several schools without Archdiocesan approval. Any such involvement with Regnum Christi is to end immediately.”

In March, Pope Benedict XVI ordered an apostolic visitation of the Legionaries of Christ in response to the turmoil caused by revelations that the group’s founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel, had apparently led a double life marked by sexual and fiscal improprieties.
