As far as what it will take to create change, the church and its parishioners may be at odds. Parishioners are angry about having to come up with millions of dollars to pay for the defense of the church and its priests. The situation with Lahey, who was seen as a leader himself and is now charged with child pornography, is adding insult to injury. Among the changes recommended by Catholic parishioners is a radical change in the celibacy policy because celibacy never works . They say that the days of a celibate priesthood must end and that the church must allow women and married men to become priests. Leaders of the church disagree, saying that adding non-celibate clergy will not eliminate the temptations of priests who live secret lives. One thing is for certain. Church congregations are shrinking.
