BOSTON — Parishioners at four Roman Catholic churches in greater Boston are marking the fifth anniversary of sit-ins to protest the Boston Archdiocese's decision to close the churches.

The parishes are among more than 60 closed by the archdiocese as part of a reconfiguration plan announced in 2004 to deal with falling attendance, a priest shortage and financial problems.

A celebration to recognize the vigils is scheduled for Saturday at St. James the Great Parish in Wellesley, one of the churches marking five years of vigils.

The other churches are Our Lady of Mount Carmel in East Boston, St. Therese Church in Everett and St. Frances X. Cabrini Church in Scituate.

Protesters are hoping to force the archdiocese — or the Vatican — to reopen the churches.
