Former Roman Catholic bishop Raymond Lahey, who resigned last Saturday from his diocese, was arrested last week on child pornography charges.

According to media reports border officials found child pornography on his laptop after a random search.

In August, Bishop Lahey oversaw a controversial $15-million settlement related to sexual abuse in his diocese. Many area parishioners are angry that Lahey's settlement requires cash-strapped local parishes to pay out the money.

The Antigonish Diocese has a brief notice on bishop Lahey's resignation on its website.

The Casket, the local Antigonish paper, has more on his resignation including excerpts from his resignation letter (it can be read in full here). The letter makes no mention of the recent charges.

From the story:

A letter from Bishop Lahey, ad-dressed to the priests, deacons, religious and parishioners, was posted on the Diocese of Antigonish's website Sunday afternoon.

"I want to let you know that after much thought and careful consideration, I decided to submit to the Holy Father my resignation as Bishop for personal reasons," Bishop Lahey wrote.

He acknowledged the "challenges" the Diocese is facing and expressed his confidence "that your faith and compassion will continue to sustain you as they have always done."
