Diocese Keeps Homestead/munhall Parish, Closes Three Churches Pittsburgh Post-Gazette September 27, 2009 http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09270/1001257-100.stm After discussions about whether to close the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Homestead/Munhall, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Saturday that the parish will remain open, though three of its four church buildings will close Nov. 1. The parish serves 640 families, or about 1,500 people, said diocese spokesman Rev. Ronald P. Lengwin, but the parish has struggled financially as the Catholic population has declined in the area. "They don't need four buildings," said Father Lengwin. Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Michael the Archangel churches will close; the parish will consolidate, and one building in Homestead, Saint Anne Church, will remain open. Saint Anne Church will be renamed Saint Maximilian Kolbe Church. The parish's new pastor will be Father Daniel Sweeney, formerly parochial vicar at Saint Maximilian Kolbe Parish and Saint Therese of Lisieux Parish in Munhall.
