LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Court documents allege that the cardinal of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles told subordinates to delay reporting clergy abuse claims to the police until the priest in question could be defrocked.

The papers filed Friday allege that in 2000 Cardinal Roger Mahony also instructed his subordinate not to tell parishioners of the allegations against the now-defrocked Rev. Michael Baker.

The information is contained in the deposition of former vicar for clergy, Monsignor Richard Loomis, as part of a civil case.

Plaintiff's attorney John Manly says the archdiocese did not notify police of the claims against Baker until 2002.

Two archdiocese attorneys and an archdiocese spokesman did not immediately return calls after business hours.

Baker was convicted in 2007 on molestation charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
