SOUTH AFRICA — The Methodist Church of Southern Africa has welcomed calls for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct at the controversial Central Methodist Church in the Johannesburg city centre.

On Monday, Eyewitness News revealed that young girls were allegedly being sexually abused while young boys were being recruited into a life of crime.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa's Bishop Ivan Abrahams claims attempts to get government to deal with the crisis at the facility have been extremely frustrating.

"We've gone to social development and we've had little cooperation from them," Abrahams said.

The Democratic Alliance's Jack Bloom responded to the situation saying that all tiers of government should get involved at the church which has been deteriorating in recent months.

"We also need relocation - it simply cannot go on that we have this one church crammed with people together," Bloom said emphatically.

More than a hundred children, mostly Zimbabwean, are living in appalling conditions at the facility.

Some of them arrived at the church unaccompanied by adults.
