Ex-Priest to Plead Guilty, Court Told WAtoday September 8, 2009 http://www.watoday.com.au/breaking-news-national/expriest-to-plead-guilty-court-told-20090908-ff8h.html A former South Australian Catholic priest who was extradited from Indonesia in February will plead guilty to three child sex charges, a court has heard. In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, defence counsel Stephen Ey said Charles Alfred Barnett, 68, would plead guilty to three counts of indecent assault. The charges relate to alleged offences at Crystal Brook and Port Pirie, in SA's mid-north, between 1977 and 1985. Mr Ey said Barnett would plead not guilty to the remaining six offences which included having unlawful sexual intercourse. Magistrate Alf Grasso remanded Barnett in custody to appear in the South Australian District Court on October 12. The former priest was arrested in Indonesia last year and was returned to Australia after spending several months in custody. Barnett tried to fight his extradition on the grounds he would lose his Indonesian home if sent to Australia. He told the South Jakarta District Court he did not understand why the allegations were being made. Barnett had lived in Indonesia since the mid 1990s, helping Indonesian students wishing to study overseas. |
