Confidence in the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church in eastern Nova Scotia is being put to the test with a proposed settlement agreement on compensation for the victims of sexual abuse by priests. It is a difficult test for the bishop and other current leaders within the Diocese of Antigonish, and a challenge for parishioners as well, because failed leadership within the hierarchy of the church over the years is responsible in no small part for abusive priests being able to operate for too long with relative impunity and in secrecy.

Announcement of the agreement last Friday came as a bit of a surprise because negotiations towards a settlement appeared to have reached an impasse a year ago when the proposed class action suit against the diocese was formally launched. However, determination on the part of two principal actors — Bishop Raymond Lahey and lead plaintiff Ronald Martin of Sydney — prevailed.
