Perquimans County, NC — A Baptist summer camp director in Eastern Carolina is facing sex crime charges against children.

Stephen Carter has been indicted on felony first degree sex offense against a child and felony indecent liberties with a child in Perquimans County.

Carter is the director of Camp Cale Retreat in Perquimans County. Todd Tilley, the Perquimans Clerk of Superior Court, says Carter is not allowed to have any contact with people under the age 18, with the exception of his own children. That stipulation was imposed by the magistrate.

Carter was arrested on July 1, Tilley said, for an alleged incident on June 15. Carter posted an $80,000 bond and remains free.

Tilley said it is up to the district attorney to set Carter's next court date now that the grand jury has indicted him.

The camp's website says the 50-year-old has been directing the camp since 2002. The site also says Carter and his wife recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
