As many as 91 percent trusted the Papacy in 1998. Today the figure stands at 80 percent

Social attitudes among Poles have changed greatly over the last 10 years, but few would argue that religious faith is in danger of dying out in one of the largest bastions of Catholicism in the EU.

A survey published on Thursday doesn't indicate the death of faith in Poland, but does suggest that it is diminishing. The data, published in daily Rzeczpospolita, shows that fewer Poles attend church services on Sundays than a decade ago. Confidence in the papacy is also shown to be waning.

"Poles are not abandoning [religious] belief ... but are distancing themselves from systematic religious practices," Slawomir Zareba, the professor and priest who organized the poll, told the daily.

As many as 37 percent of Poles go to religious services every Sunday, according to the poll, compared with 42 percent in 1998. The number of people who attend on an irregular basis actually increased, however.

Confidence in the Papacy has dropped 11 percent since 1998, when the figure stood at 91 percent.
