Jason Berry, Vows of Silence author, documentary producer and Professor Jose Barba of Mexico City whose canon law case sparked Maciel investigation will hold press conference in the shadow of the Vatican

“Vows of Silence,” the documentary by Jason Berry based on his book with Gerald Renner, has two screenings Thursday at the Adriano theatre in Rome as part of RomaFictionFest, an international festival for television films, feature series and documentaries.

Berry’s film, which received Best TV Documentary award at the 2008 Docs. D.F. festival in Mexico City, explores the Vatican’s handling of Father Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ and one of the most notorious pedophiles in church history.

In February, the Legion disclosed that Maciel, who died in 2008, had a grown daughter out of wedlock.

Professor Jose Barba of Mexico City, who filed the 1998 canon law case at the Vatican that sparked the investigation which led Pope Benedict to banish Maciel from ministry in 2006, will appear at a 1.30 PM press conference with Berry at the theatre on July 9. The film will be shown at 10 AM and 10.30 PM.

Since the news of Maciel’s daughter went public, the Vatican has opened a new investigation of the entire order.
