  Retired Philly Prosecutor Joining Lehigh County Daa's Office

Charles F. Gallagher III will be a leader and mentor, says District Attorney James Martin.

Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin has announced that attorney Charles F. Gallagher III, a Philadelphia prosecutor for more than 30 years who directed investigations and prosecutions of many high-profile cases, has joined the Lehigh County district attorneyA's office as a full-time chief deputy district attorney.

Gallagher, 62, of Philadelphia, will prosecute cases involving major crimes and will assist other prosecutors in preparing cases for trial. He retired from the Philadelphia district attorneyA's office in June, most recently serving as a deputy district attorney in the Special Investigation Unit.

He was senior prosecutor of the 3A''-year Investigating grand jury inquiry into sexual abuse of minors by clergy in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and concealment by archdiocese officials. The result was a nationally recognized grand jury report.

Gallagher said that after 35 years in Philadelphia, he wanted to move on in his profession but wanted to continue his vocation as a career prosecutor.

Gallagher received a bachelorA's degree in economics from St. JosephA's College in Philadelphia and a law degree from Delaware Law School of Widener University. He attended the Navy Officer Candidate School and Naval Justice School. A former lieutenant in the Navy, Gallagher served on the USS Inchon with the Atlantic Fleet from 1969 to 1972.
