Mike Adams, Meet Dan Savage Houston Voice July 2, 2009 http://www.houstonvoice.com/blog/index.cfm?type=blog&start=7/1/09&end=7/2/09 One of my favorite things that Dan Savage writes is his "Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father" column, which debunks any fundie's argument that a same-sex couple is an unfit parenting match for a child by providing examples of opposite-sex parents who abuse their children in the manner that fundies think all same-sex couples do. The point is, there are some horrible people in this world who will do effed up things to their children, regardless of the sexual orientation of the parent. This week in North Carolina, it was revealed that a gay parent of an adopted child allegedly advertised sex with his kid on the Internet. Luckily, the guy on the other end was a detective, and Frank Lombard has been arrested by the FBI. Lombard's partner is not being charged in this case. Mike Adams, a columnist at Townhall.com, will turn this into a case solely based on Lombard's sexual orientation. He writes: "The Associate Press (AP) did not mention the fact that the five-year old offered up for molestation was black. Bringing that fact to light might be damaging to the political coalition that exists between blacks and gays. Nor did the AP mention that the adopted child is being raised by a homosexual couple. Bringing that fact to light might harm the gay adoption movement. I wrote this column because I believe that certain coalitions must be broken. And certain movements must be harmed. Let the political fallout begin." Should the AP have left out those details? Probably not. But the victim in this situation is the child, who will have to suffer his whole life for what he endured. The child's status as victim has nothing to do with his race or the fact that he was being raised by a gay couple. It has everything to do with Lombard's sick, sick mindset. In his next column, Adams makes a ridiculous assessment of Lombard's religious identity and Facebook page, on which he is a "fan" of Bishop Gene Robinson, the openly gay Episcopal bishop who is currently at the center of a rift in the church. He asks: "Frank Lombard stands accused of molesting a five year old. Is this arrest thwarting an effort by Lombard to promote tolerance of pedophilia in the Episcopal Church?" Then, Adams posted a response from Duke University. The most relevant and poignant quote from the release follows: "No one is really talking about how to keep the young child himself central to this conversation, how to keep his humanity before us … he doesn’t seem to be visible in this.” |
