The Anglican Church has released a report into past cases of child sex abuse within the church in Australia.

University of Sydney researchers examined 191 incidents involving 17 dioceses across the country between 1990 and 2008.

The study shows boys aged between 10 and 15 were the most likely victims, while the average time it took for abuse to be reported to authorities was 23 years.

Australian Head of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Phillip Aspinall says the report recommends codes of conduct to prevent further abuse.

The Head of the Anglican Church in Australia, Archbishop Phillip Aspinall, says the report also found the church must enforce codes of conduct to prevent further abuse.

"Children and youth workers should not be alone with children in circumstances where misconduct could go on undetected," he said.

"So they shouldn't travel with children alone, they shouldn't be on camps alone with children, they shouldn't be on church premises alone with children."
