Ireland's Catholic bishops appear determined to maintain their involvement in the running of hundreds of schools across the country.

The bishops issued a statement last night following a three-day meeting in Maynooth to discuss the fallout from the Ryan Report into the widespread abuse of children in religious-run State institutions.
They insisted children were adequately protected from the risk of abuse in schools and said it would be wrong to remove religious orders from the managing of schools.
