Sex Complaint against Teacher before Ag's Office By Jasmin Bonimy The Nassau Guardian May 15, 2009 http://www.thenassauguardian.com/national_local/299131604178561.php Investigators have wrapped up their initial investigations into a sexual complaint made against a teacher at the Church of God Academy and the case has been turned over to the Attorney General's Office, police confirmed yesterday. Superintendent Ellsworth Moss said the case is now in the hands of the AG's Office, who will ultimately decide if the Church of God Academy teacher will face charges relating to a sexual complaint made by a female student at the private school on Joe Farrington Road. While the educator was initially taken into custody earlier this week in connection with the complaints, Supt. Moss said he was released pending further investigations. On Wednesday, one day after news of the sexual complaint broke, Moss confirmed that the Elizabeth Estates Police Station had initially investigated the matter earlier in the week and the file on the case was turned over to CDU that same morning. Officials at the school have remained relatively quiet on the issue but did release a short statement on Wednesday. Spokesperson for the school Bishop Goliath Burrows said in the statement: "At present, due to a number of accusations tendered into the administrative offices of the Academy, this particular staff member has been suspended indefinitely effective immediately from all active duty at the Church of God Academy pending police investigations amalgamated with our own internal investigations." Officials said that despite recent reports, the school administration is taking a proactive approach. "We wish to assure all parents and members of the public that we at the Church of God Academy still uphold the highest Christian values and principles in our institution and we have already commenced an internal investigation as it relates to the accusations and complaints levied against the member of staff," the statement said. News of this latest alleged sexual assault in a local school comes weeks after Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham revealed there are currently 15 public school teachers against whom allegations of sexual abuse are being investigated. Those teachers have been taken out of classrooms. His comments came while Parliamentarians discussed the appointment of a select committee to investigate reports of sexual molestation at the Eight Mile Rock High School in Grand Bahama.
