A Queensland Church Leader Says He Expected the Mackay Catholic Community Will Rally around a Priest Who Is Facing Sexual Misconduct Allegations in a Sydney Court.

Fifty-eight-year-old Kevin Phillips has pleaded not guilty to charges involving his time as a teacher at a Bathurst school in 1990.

He has been relieved of all duties until the case is resolved.

Rockhampton diocese Bishop Brian Heenan says Father Phillips is popular and well-respected in his Mackay parishes.

"He is innocent as far as I'm concerned," he said.

"He has not been proved guilty in any sense of the word and he is going to vigorously defend his innocence and we'll stand with him and the people that he served and who love him so much will stand by him too."
