The defense attorney for the Rev. Johnson Pappusamy, who had been a Catholic priest in Scottville and Custer, said the incident his client is being charged with happened at the Ludington Meijer Feb. 11, but said Pappusamy told him there was no intentional inappropriate contact.

Defense attorney Jefferey Crampton of Grand Rapids said the allegations against his client accuse Pappusamy of inappropriate touching of a 28-year-old man, someone the priest didn't know, and who is not connected with the church.

Pappusamy wasn't wearing his religious collar or any other religious items at the time of the alleged incident, Crampton said.

The priest was arraigned Wednesday in Mason County District Court on a charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. The misdemeanor is punishable by up to two years behind bars.

His preliminary examination is set for April 22.

Prosecutors say the charge stems from a Feb. 11 incident involving Pappusamy and a 28-year-old and would not say any more about the incident.

Pappusamy resigned from his post as pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Custer and St. Jerome Catholic Church in Scottville Feb. 18 after he learned of the investigation. He was removed from active ministry as a result of the allegation.
