Milwaukee Archbishop to Lead Archdiocese in New York CNN February 23, 2009 http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/23/dolan.newyork/
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Archbishop Timothy Dolan will become the new archbishop of New York, the Vatican announced Monday Dolan, the current archbishop of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, succeeds Archbishop Edward Egan, who is retiring from the post. Egan, 76, has led the New York archdiocese since 2000. He became a cardinal a year later. In a news release, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg thanked Egan for his service and welcomed Dolan. "For the past nine years, Edward Cardinal Egan has led the Archdiocese of New York with great skill and compassion," Bloomberg said. "I look forward to working with Archbishop Dolan to continue making New York City a place where families of all faiths work together toward common goals and shared dreams." Dolan, 59, was named Archbishop of Milwaukee by Pope John Paul II on June 25, 2002, according to his biography on the Milwaukee archdiocese Web site. He was installed as Milwaukee's 10th archbishop on August 28, 2002, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, papal nuncio -- the Vatican's ambassador -- to the United States, installed Dolan. Dolan served in Rome from 1994 to 2001 before returning to the United States to become auxiliary bishop of St. Louis, Missouri. "I relish the blessing of spending the years as your pastor, ... friend, neighbor, " Dolan said. "I look forward especially to be with the priests, to just listen to them and getting to know them." Egan said he has known Dolan for years, and described him as "a devout priest." Dolan will be installed April 15 at St. Patrick's Cathedral. |
