U.S. Attorney on Radio for One Hour and No One Mentions Investigation of Cardinal Mahony By Kay Ebeling City of Angels February 15, 2009 http://cityofangels5.blogspot.com/2009/02/we-urge-new-archbishop-to-choose-life.html With cyber crime, international human trafficking, the arrest last year of 70 gang members in one day, the Champions of Justice show on KABC Radio in LA just interviewed U.S. Attorney Thomas O’Brien for one whole hour and never even mentioned the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese or a Grand Jury. The show is produced by a local law firm, and the two lawyer hosts did not even ask about a Cardinal Mahony investigation that was all over the news for about three days last month. "With a sweeping federal racketeering indictment, more than 500 agents, including 10 SWAT teams, arrested 28 people in an attempt to root out the Avenues gang members who have ruled the area with violence and near impunity," from a June 26, 2008, news report. Our little felonies just don’t add up to much in the eyes of these radio producer slash attorneys, when compared to cyber crime that includes military secrets, entire houses full of women in sex slavery, as well as entire movies on CD being sold in China before they are even released in the U.S.A. Don't forget potential Al Quaeda members living in Orange County. As the show went on O’Brien began to sound more and more like the Bush appointee from 2007 that he is. The introduction quoted this week’s LA times story, mentioned L.A. Times about 7 times, how police arrested 28 in a specific neighborhood in LA. They Said O’Brien was "quite a guest." I took notes and will probably use some quotes and leads for LA City Buzz stories, but U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien said nada, nyet, rien de tout about the Catholic Church handling of its epidemic of pedophilia. The program Champions of Justice is a paid commercial announcement, they said at the end of the show. “The providers are entirely responsible for content, not KABC.” It’s a show produced by a local law firm. And they totally ignored the story about an investigation of Cardinal Roger Mahony that had thrown the news media into such a frenzy last month. Now I suspect they were diverting our attention from something else. What would be the reason for the leak about an investigation? I wondered that from the start, because truthfully, the level of crime in L.A. is so high, it’s hard to be noticed. It’s like having a bad infection in a medical triage during a disaster. You just have to take care of yourself, the professionals are tied up with worse problems. I took notes from the show, and will probably use some of this for L.A. City Buzz Examiner stories, but I’d say after listening to this, that prosecuting and investigating the church is not going to be a high priority for this U.S. Attorney, who remember, was appointed by President George Bush, after the U.S. Attorney scandal had come out. O’Brien didn't bring up a grand jury investigation of The Church. Nor did the lawyers doing the show as a PR event. |
