The bishop of Rotterdam Ad van Luyn had ordered Ruud Huysmans to dissolve the partnership with theologian Freda Dröes or face expulsion from the priesthood. The court ruled that Huysmans, who does not share a house with Dröes, had not broken the law. In the Netherlands, a registered partnership carries all the legal weight of a formal marriage.
