GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - The vicar for clergy in the Diocese of Phoenix, 44-year-old Monsignor James Wall, will become the fourth bishop in the history of the Diocese of Gallup.

Wall was named by the Vatican today.

He's expected to take over the Gallup diocese this spring.

The diocese encompasses northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona.

Last year, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Gallup's bishop, Donald Pelotte, who had been recovering from head injuries in an apparent fall at his home.

Pelotte had been the first Native American bishop when he was consecrated in 1990. His father was a member of the Abenaki tribe.

Wall was born in 1964 in Ganado, Arizona, and holds a degree in history from Arizona State University.
