Murderer jailed for drug offence

A CONVICTED murderer and drug dealer has been jailed for two years after he was found in possession of ˆ1,980 worth of cocaine.

Anthony O'Reilly (22) of Cleggan Park, Ballyfermot, Dublin, received a life sentence last April after he had been convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of murdering Daniel McDonald on Main Street, Arklow, in Wicklow on February 2, 2007. He had 18 previous convictions.

Fine for providing unlicensed alarm

A private security operator was fined yesterday for providing an intruder alarm service without a licence.

Shay Fitzsimons, trading as S F Security and Electrical, of Rakeevan, Bailieboro, Co Cavan, was fined ˆ500 and ordered to pay costs of ˆ1,000.

US Catholics want bishop to resign

A group of influential American Catholics have appealed to Pope Benedict to supports calls from Irish lay people for the resignation or removal of Bishop John Magee over his failure to implement proper child protection procedures in his Cloyne diocese.

In a statement issued in Boston, the Voice of the Faithful in the United States said it was joining its branch in Ireland in seeking accountability.

Man charged with murder

A MAN has appeared in court yesterday in relation to the murder of a 21-year-old in a house almost 14 months ago. Robert Devine (32), of Wheatfields, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, was brought before Waterford District Court after being charged with the murder of Joseph Cummins on November 24, 2007.

Mr Cummins is believed to have suffered stab wounds at a house on Lower Grange Road, near St John's Park, Waterford. Gardai yesterday arrested Mr Devine in Clonmel, who was remanded in custody to appear again next Tuesday.
