The Minister for Children, Barry Andrews, has said child protection reporting procedures are robust.

He was speaking after the publication of a report on sexual abuse in the diocese of Cloyne.

A second report is expected from the Health Service Executive.

The report by the National Safeguarding Board for Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC) found the Catholic church had not responded properly to abuse allegations.

An NBSCCC review of child abuse inquiries in the diocese of Cloyne found the church authorities broke their own rules on reporting allegations.

Last night the Bishop of Cloyne, John Magee, apologised to the victims of clerical sexual abuse and said there was no place in the church for the perpetrators.

Today, Barry Andrews said he intended to publish the HSE report on the events in Cloyne.

However, local Labour TD Sean Sherlock has questioned the Government's handling of the report and has called on Bishop Magee to consider stepping aside.

The abuse victim support group, One in Four, said the report showed the Church could not be trusted to put the safety of children first.
