Eighty-year-old Sister Norma Giannini (gee-ah-NEE'-nee) has served eight months of her one-year jail sentence. Her attorneys asked for Giannini's early release, citing her failing health. The judge denied the request Friday, saying her health issues were known at sentencing, and she's receiving adequate treatment. Giannini had pleaded no contest to two felony counts of indecent behavior with a child. Giannini used to live with the order Sisters of Mercy of the Chicago Regional Community. The order's president says she hopes the healing has begun for the victims. Giannini's lawyer didn't immediately return a message Friday.
