Kochi, Dec 09: The CBI on Tuesday informed the Kerala High Court that the petition filed by 19 nuns alleging harassment by it was an "organised" move to resist investigation in the Sister Abhaya case in which two priests and a nun have been arrested.

Denying that the agency had harassed or intimidated witnesses in the case, CBI DySP Nandakumaran Nair stated in a counter affidavit that an impression was being created among the public that those arrested in the case are "innocent".

In the counter to the petition by Mother Superior Annie John and 18 others of St Joseph Generalate, the CBI said there was no harassment. Only as part of the investigation, the inmates of the St Pius convent, where Abhaya was an inmate, are being questioned.

The CBI also claimed that the agency had even sent a letter to the nuns asking them to inform it about the place of their choice where they should be questioned. This was done to avoid unnecessary trouble and publicity. The CBI has no difficulty in examining the sisters in the generalate itself, he said.

Some of the nuns expressed their willingness to come to HNL guest house at Vellore, it stated. They also denied the allegation that the investigation team "created terror".

A Division bench, comprising justices K Balakrishnan and M C Harirani, adjourned the case to Monday.

The CBI also stated that the petition has been filed with "oblique" motive. What is projected there on is a defence version which is the result of an "organised move of the entire congregation", the agency said.

Abhaya's body was found in the well of the St Pius Covent at Kottayam in 1992. Two priests and a nun were arrested on November 19 in connection with the case.
