THE Syro Malabar Church in Kerala has come out in support of the accused in the Sister Abhaya murder case.

Two priests and a nun are cited as accused in the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the investigating agency probing the murder case.

The CBI had arrested Thomas M Kottur, E Jose Poothrukka and Sister Sephy on Nov 19. They were produced before a court in Kochi and remanded to custody.

Syro Malabar Church spokesman Paul Thelakkat recently conveyed the clergy's displeasure over the CBI probe into the case.

"Some magic seems to be at work that a case which was not proved for 16 years is depicted to have been solved in 16 minutes," he is said to have told a group of believers in Kottayam, according to a Times of India report.

The church said that basic human rights were being denied to the accused a charge that the CBI has rubbished on earlier occasions.

Sister Abhaya's body was found in a well in the convent hostel. The nun was then 21 year old. There were allegations of insider involvement in the case. However, the church had all along denied any hand in it.

Media reports state that the investigators believe Abhaya was murdered after she witnessed alleged sexual escapades of the priests who were regular visitors to the convent.
