WALPOLE (AP) - The man convicted of killing convicted pedophile ex-priest John Geoghan, who began his career in 1962 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Saugus, claims he was taken out of his cell and beaten by three prison guards on Halloween night.

The state prisons department as well as a prisoners' rights group are investigating.

Leslie Walker, director of Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services, said in a published report that Joseph Druce was "very badly bruised."

Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin says the alleged incident that happened at MCI-Cedar Junction in Walpole is "under investigation."

Druce was already serving a life sentence for murder when he killed Geoghan in his cell in August 2003.

Druce claimed God told him to kill pedophiles and unsuccessfully used an insanity defense at trial.

Geoghan, the former curate of Blessed Sacrament Church in Saugus, was linked to the molestation of 130 children, including 17 in Saugus, in his 37-year career as a priest.

In 2002 Geoghan was convicted of indecent assault and battery and subsequently sentenced to nine to 10 years in prison.
