Members of a Montgomery County family have denied allegations by a Roman Catholic priest that they made up the stories of his sexual abuse of their three children.

The Rev. John W. Broderick, 47, is seeking $500,000, alleging the family made several "defamatory statements" about him. The three-page lawsuit filed Nov. 17, which names the alleged victims, describes several statements made by members of the family but doesn't specify when or where they were made.

New York City attorney John A. Aretakis, who represents the family, said the family's response to the priest's lawsuit will be filed Monday. The four-page response made available Friday says the priest's accusations against the family were untrue, except for his having sexually abused several boys.

The priest faces charges of three felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and misdemeanor counts of child endangerment. He is accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with three children, ranging in age from 5 to 11, over a few months in 2007. The trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 26.

The priest was involved with the Dominican Sisters, a Catholic group not recognized by the Vatican, which runs the Holy Name of Jesus Academy in Massena. He worked there from mid-2007 until his arrest in February at the school. No complaints were filed against him in Massena.

Mr. Aretakis said the family soon plans to file a lawsuit against the priest over the alleged sexual abuse.
