ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It's a painful reality many Alaskans and the Fairbanks Catholic Diocese are working to heal.

Several church clergy and volunteers sexually abused children in some of our most remote communities in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Victims have until Dec. 2 to file a claim against the Diocese of Fairbanks.

For too long, the crimes stayed secret, and in some cases those who spoke up were punished, sometimes even with beatings.

An effort is underway to help right those wrongs, including asking victims to come forward.

And now, more than ever, those who haven't come forward are encouraged to do so, because time is running out.

The diocese is in bankruptcy and the deadline to file claims against is Dec. 2, just a week from Tuesday.

"The bishop very much encourages anyone to come forward and report anything, even if they are unsure as to details or situations, to come forward and have their say and state what they observed," said Ronnie Rosenberg, the director of human resources for the diocese.
