MILWAUKEE - More shocking information about the child sex abuse cases in the Milwaukee Archdiocese: a deposition by former Archbishop Rembert Weakland provides more evidence that leaders of the Catholic Church may have covered up the abuse.

In this new information, Weakland says another well known and highly respected leader of the Milwaukee Archdiocese was involved in all of the abuse cases.

He also talks about the destruction of important documents.

The legal deposition where Weakland goes on the record, answering questions about sexual abuse in the Archdiocese was obtained and released by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

“This is how evil operates, and it doesn't look like you think it does, and nobody thinks that they, themselves, are committing any evil,” Peter Isely from SNAP said.

Among the shocking things here, Weakland says respected auxiliary bishop Richard Sklba was involved in handling all of the sexual abuse cases. Sklba is well known to Milwaukee Catholics.

Weakland: “He was the auxiliary bishop, so I would say he was my main go-to guy on many things, yes."

Q: "And on the sexual abuse issue?"

Weakland: "Certainly he would be involved in all of them, yes.”

Weakland also talked about important documents related to abuse cases and how they were destroyed.

“As I understood it, after a certain period it was to be destroyed, and no one was permitted to see it but the person, the priest who had signed off on it,” Weakland said.

SNAP wonders if that document destruction is a crime and gave the Milwaukee County DA a copy of the deposition.

Also in the deposition, Weakland praises former Milwaukee County District Attorney Michael McCann, and Weakland names defense attorney Jerry Boyle. He says Boyle represented a number of priests and the diocese. Boyle denied any formal arrangement with the diocese when TODAY’S TMJ4 talked to him Thursday.
