MILWAUKEE (AP) - The former head of Milwaukee's Catholic community says he returned sexually abusive priests to active ministry without telling parishioners because he knew they wouldn't be accepted otherwise.

The comments of retired Archbishop Rembert Weakland came in a videotaped deposition released today.

Weakland gave the deposition in June to a lawyer representing seven people who claim they were assaulted by priests. The cases are expected to go to trial next summer.

Archdiocese spokesman Jerry Topczewski (top-CHESS'-kee) says it will be nearly impossible to ever know what happened. He says the cases are decades old, and most of the alleged offenders and church officials involved are dead.

He says the diocese's priority remains helping sexual-abuse victims achieve resolution.
