MAKING MUSIC: Adam Crane, a native St. Louisan and newly hired PR topper for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, will be a featured speaker about the book "The Soloist" at the Jewish Book Festival on Nov. 9. Crane, who formerly was head of PR for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is featured in the book, which was written by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez. "The Soloist" is about Nathaniel Ayers, an LA skid row bum who was a musical prodigy studying classical bass at Juilliard before he had a mental breakdown. Ben Hong, assistant principal cellist with the LA Phil, a friend of Crane's and another of the musicians who befriended Ayers, will also be at the book festival. Concertmaster David Halen and others members of the SLSO will perform music based on the book. "The Soloist" has also been made into a film starring Jamie Foxx as Ayers and Robert Downey Jr. as Lopez. Hong trained some cast members in the film and was the on-set technical adviser. The film is due out in March. For more information on Crane's talk, go to: www.jccstl.com/content/176/st_louis_jewish_book_festival.aspx

FOR THE DEFENSE: Acclaimed St. Louis defense attorney Scott Rosenblum has been retained to represent defrocked priest Joseph D. Ross on 11 counts of statutory rape, statutory sodomy and child molestation. Ross was arrested in Arkansas last month and waived extradition to return here to face the charges. Ross was the first priest from the Archdiocese of St. Louis who was defrocked for abusing minors. He was laicized in August 2002. The current charges allege that Ross abused a minor between 1998 and 2000 in the 1200 block of Boyle Avenue in St. Louis. St. Cronan Parish, where Ross was a pastor at the time the alleged abuse took place, is at 1202 South Boyle Avenue. Rosenblum also defended Bryan Kuchar, who was suspended by the archdiocese in 2002 and found guilty in 2003 of abusing a St. Louis County boy.

BUCKS TAKE CHARGE: Joe and Julie Buck are part of a group that is taking over ownership of two of the seven J. Buck's restaurants, the brother and sister said Tuesday. They have had a licensing agreement with WAG Restaurants, which owns and operates the J. Buck's family of restaurants, but have not owned them. The new ownership company — Bodley Buck LLC — will take over the Clayton and downtown St. Louis locations. Managing partner Doug Albrecht, retired chairman and CEO of Centric Group, is chairman of Bodley Group. Other owners are: Thom Sehnert, owner of Annie Gunn's and The Smokehouse Market in Chesterfield; Dan Dierdorf, CBS sportscaster, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and partner in Dierdorf & Hart's Steakhouse in West Port; and Tom Sobbe, a retired executive with Anheuser-Busch. The other five J. Buck's — in O'Fallon, Mo., West County Center, Fairview Heights, Bloomington, Ill., and Springfield, Mo. — will continue to be operated by WAG Restaurants, which is headed by local restaurateur Ted Geiger. The Bucks' agreement with the restaurant company ends next year. The Bucks want to upgrade the Clayton and Cupples Station locations, and expand at Cupples to accommodate live music and events.

WELL, WELL: Jerry Pass, a passionate supporter of The Wellness Community, was celebrated and honored in memoriam at the organization's gala on Saturday night. Pass, Michael and Carol Staenberg and the Staenberg Family Foundation, and the city of Des Peres received Marsha Wolff and Tina Borchert Inspiration Awards at the event. The awards were named for the late founders of The Wellness Community of Greater St. Louis. More than 500 guests attended the gala — "Celebration of Hope — A Fete Accompli" — at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. Cheryl Reid chaired the event; Donna Cohen was co-chair; Joan Quicksilver was advisory chair; and Alison and John Ferring were honorary chairs.
