Sentence Had Been Delayed Six Months for Medical Treatment

STAMFORD - After six delays, a Roman Catholic priest convicted of stealing more than $1 million from his Darien church began his three-year prison sentence Tuesday, according to federal prison officials.
Michael Jude Fay, a former pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church, was processed at 12:56 p.m. at a federal medical facility in Massachusetts, said a spokesman for the facility, FMC Devens.

His surrender date was delayed six times as Bureau of Prisons officials and Fay's doctors at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York discussed how to continue his experimental treatment for prostate cancer.
Nora Dannehy, acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, commended the Federal Bureau of Prisons in a statement.
"While the government never doubted that this defendant would one day begin service of his sentence, this was a difficult and unique situation that was resolved thanks to the diligent efforts of the BOP and its dedicated medical personnel," she said.
Fay pleaded guilty to interstate transportation of money obtained by fraud in Sept. 2007 and in December was sentenced to 37 months in prison. He was initially scheduled to begin serving his sentence in April.
