Call for Women Priests Renewed in Rome ABC 13 October 15, 2008 http://www.wlos.com/template/inews_wire/wires.international/28587f92-www.wlos.com.shtml ROME (AP) — Catholic women seeking to be priests took their campaign near the Vatican today, chanting slogans and accusing the Vatican of "injustice" and "sexism." The women represent Catholic organizations from around the world. They marched across the Tiber close to St. Peter's Square, some draped in a purple cloth and wearing signs with the names of prominent women from the early days of the Catholic Church. They're hoping to call attention to the exclusion of women priests as hundreds of bishops gather in Rome during this week's synod. Still, the Vatican is not seen as likely to drop its ban on women in the priesthood. Rome's determination has also been a blow to Catholics who see the idea as an option for a church that's been struggling to recruit men to the cloth. |
