Police in the Hunter region of New South Wales have arrested a Catholic priest over alleged sexual assaults on young boys dating back more than 30 years in the Newcastle area.

Peter Julian Brock has been granted conditional bail after appearing in Newcastle Local Court on 22 charges, including indecent assault and buggery.

Another Hunter priest has been charged with child sex offences.

Police allege the offences relate to attacks on two 12-year-old brothers in the 1970s.

A 56-year-old Newcastle man has also been charged with 13 sex offences relating to one of the brothers and two other alleged victims, then aged 13 and 14 years.

Police allege that the men may have committed some of the offences together on the same victim.

In August, police charged two priests aged 65 and 70 as part of Strike Force Georgiana, which was established to investigate several alleged historical sexual assaults.

The 65-year-old was charged with 67 child sex offences dating back to the 1970s in August, relating to 18 alleged victims aged 11 to 17.

Most of his alleged victims were students of Newcastle's St Pius X Catholic High School.

The 70-year-old was charged with perverting the course of justice.
