AN independent inquiry into the Catholic Church's handling of sex abuse allegations levelled at a high-profile priest is about to begin.

The church yesterday said prominent lawyer Michael Abbott, QC, had been briefed on the case of Father John Fleming.

It would not, however, reveal the terms of reference for Mr Abbott's investigation.

Nor would it say whether Father Fleming had – as requested by Archbishop Philip Wilson – returned to Adelaide to assist.

"All we can say at this stage is this: Michael Abbott, QC, has had a preliminary briefing with senior Church officials," the spokesman said.

"(He) is examining relevant files and is preparing to interview relevant witnesses."

Police are investigating Father Fleming over claims he was sexually involved with a teenage girl and two other people in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was, at the time, a member of the Anglican Church – he left in 1987.

Yesterday, Anglican Archbishop Jeffrey Driver declined to say whether his organisation had provided information or assistance to the Catholic inquiry.

Father Fleming – who could not be contacted this week – has previously released a statement denying any wrongdoing.
