	Montgomery County Grand Jury Indicts Priest on Child Sex Charges Daily Gazette September 3, 2008 http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2008/sep/03/0903_priest/ FONDA — A Montgomery County grand jury has indicted a priest on charges he sexually abused three young members of a family for whom he was acting as a spirtual advisor. The Rev. John W. Broderick, 47, of Nicholville, St. Lawrence County, was indicted on three felony counts of second-degree child sex abuse and one misdemeanor count of first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child. The indictment alleges he abused three children between October 2005 and May 2007 in the town of Palatine and provided alcohol to a person younger than age 21 in February or June 2007. State police in Fonda began investigating after receiving a complaint from a Montgomery County family that Broderick had abused their four children after befriending the family and becoming their spiritual adviser. Broderick was arrested in February and charged with three felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse, one felony count of second-degree sexual abuse and four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. While the grand jury indictment only accuses Broderick of abusing three children, Montgomery County District Attorney James "Jed" Conboy said he was satisfied with the grand jury's decision. Broderick left the county in May 2007, ending up at the Holy Name of Jesus Academy near Massena, where he was arrested by state police investigators. He had been suspended by the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese in early 2007, but was able to continue serving as a priest because the Holy Name of Jesus Academy is run by the Dominican Sisters of Idaho, a group not officially recognized by the Catholic Church.
