Prevention Would Help More Than Program for Family Members By Barbara Blaine SNAP September 3, 2008 http://snapnetwork.org/snap_statements/2008_statements/090208_chicago_church_counseling.htm Statement by Barbara Blaine, SNAP President, 312 399 4747 Any help for those wounded by pedophile priests and complicit bishops is welcome. At the same time, however, victims and their loved ones can heal even without the church's help. We can't, however, protect kids without George's help. That's where we believe his efforts are best spent. The old saying 'An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure' is applicable here. Kids would be much safer if George would take the simple, long-overdue step of posting on his website all the names, photos and addresses of proven, admitted and credibly accused predators. While the Archdiocese currently lists the names of some priests it doesn't include the priests who worked in the Archdiocese but belonged to religious congregations. The list also fails to include where they are now and where they worked. Giving all the information would help ensure that serial pedophile priests have less access to kids right now. Healing is good, but prevention is better. Coming, as this does, in the wake of horrific disclosures of callousness and deceit by George and his top staffers (in the cases of Fr. Joseph Bennett, Fr. Norbert Maday and Fr. Daniel McCormack), this smacks more of public relations than genuine caring.
