CHICAGO - The Archdiocese of Chicago is sponsoring a new program for the families of victims who have been sexually abused by Catholic priests or deacons.

A clinical social worker will conduct the free sessions that start this week.

The Archdiocese says the program is intended to offer education and support. The sessions will last two-and-a-half-hours and will include discussions on how abuse affects families, the healing process and long-term effects.

Archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Burritt says the program is unique because it targets the family members of victims. The Archdiocese also has counseling programs for sexual abuse victims.

Last month, the Archdiocese agreed to pay almost $12.7 million to settle sex abuse claims.
