A former volunteer Sunday school teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to five counts involving the sexual molestation of young children who were under his care during classes at a Chandler church, the Maricopa County Attorney's office said.

Terence Greenwood

Police arrested Terence Greenwood, 63, last December in connection with the molestation of a 5-year-old girl.

The abuse occurred during church services in a classroom designated for children's Sunday school sessions at the Chandler United Methodist Church, which at the time was on Chandler Boulevard near Arizona Avenue. The abuse also happened at Greenwood's

home.

Earlier this year the church, one of the city's oldest, moved to a new location in south Chandler.

According to the report, Greenwood told police he molested the girl and made her perform a sex act and that he chose her because "he could take advantage of her because of her age."

During police interviews, the girl detailed the contact and said the incidents happened more than once.

Greenwood told the victim's mother, in a police recorded phone call, he blamed his actions on medications he was taking for high blood pressure, that he has erectile dysfunction and mental problems, according to police reports.

Greenwood admitted to police he tried to touch other girls in the class in December. He would try to put his hand under their dresses, but they would push his hand away, according to police.

According to a police interview, Greenwood said months earlier he also tried to inappropriately touch friends of his 11-year-old daughter. When a continuing investigation discovered additional underage female victims, a second indictment brought new charges on April 15.

Greenwood pled guilty to two counts of molestation of a child and three counts of attempted molestation of a child. He faces 35 years in prison and three lifetime probations. Sentencing is set for Sept. 24.
