Letters Show Church Officials Knew of Alleged Sex Abuse By Associated Press WNCT August 7, 2008 http://www.wnct.com/nct/lifestyles/faith_values/article/letters_show_church_officials_knew_of_alleged_sex_abuse/15855/ DOVER, Del. (AP) - Attorneys for four men who claim they were sexually abused by a Catholic priest in Delaware have released letters indicating that church officials knew of the abuse for years but allowed the priest to continue to work with children. Attorneys for the former Salesianum School students released letters written by leaders of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales on Wednesday in response to statements made by the Oblates after a lawsuit filed this week. The Oblates say they have put Father Dennis Killion on administrative leave in response to the lawsuit and would conduct an investigation into the abuse allegations. But the letters show the Oblates knew of complaints about sexual abuse by Killion at least 12 years ago but continued to allow him to work with children in Catholic schools in Pennsylvania and Florida. Diocesan officials in those two states have said Killion had received positive recommendations and clearance from the Oblates. |
