SIDNEY - Prima di ripartire da Sydney, Benedetto XVI ha incontrato una rappresentanza delle vittime dei preti pedofili. Il Papa ha celebrato questa mattina una messa con un gruppo di persone che hanno subito abusi sessuali da parte di religiosi cattolici, "ha ascoltato le loro storie e li ha consolati assicurando la sua vicinanza spirituale".
"Assicurando la sua vicinanza spirituale - spiega la nota della sala stampa vaticana - ha promesso di continuare a pregare per loro, per le loro famiglie e per tutte le vittime". "Con questo gesto paterno - aggiunge il comunicato - il Santo Padre ha voluto dimostrare ancora una volta la sua sollecitudine nei confronti di tutti coloro che hanno sofferto per gli abusi sessuali".

L'incontro è avvenuto questa mattina alle 07:00 ora australiana nella cappella della Cathedral House dove il Papa ha alloggiato in questi giorni. Erano presenti quattro vittime: due donne e due uomini accompagnati da due assistenti e dal sacerdote che ne cura l'accompagnamento spirituale. Benedetto XVI ha celebrato con il cardinale di Sidney George Pell, con il sostituto alla segreteria di stato monsignor Fernando Filoni e con i due segretari.
Al termine della messa gli ospiti hanno potuto parlare singolarmente con il Pontefice che ha rivolto loro "affettuose parole di partecipazione e di conforto". L'incontro è terminato poco prima delle 08:00 e "tutto si è svolto in un clima di rispetto, di spiritualità e di intensa commozione".
La nota del Vaticano spiega che "come già avvenuto negli Stati Uniti il Papa ha desiderato incontrare alcune vittime come gesto concreto per esprimere i sentimenti da lui già manifestati più volte nei suoi interventi sul dramma degli abusi sessuali". In Australia "ha desiderato farlo dopo la conclusione delle giornate mondiali della gioventù perché queste erano il motivo specifico del suo viaggio".
Il tema dello scandalo della pedofilia nella chiesa in Australia ha fatto da sfondo al viaggio di papa Ratzinger. Già in aereo, mentre volava verso Sydney, il Pontefice aveva ammonito che "la pedofilia è incompatibile" con il sacerdozio. E sabato, davanti al clero australiano, aveva duramente condannato gli abusi sessuali, definendoli "misfatti che costituiscono un così grave tradimento della fiducia". "Questi misfatti, che costituiscono un così grave tradimento della fiducia - aveva proseguito - devono essere condannati in modo inequivocabile. Essi hanno causato grande dolore e hanno danneggiato la testimonianza della chiesa. Le vittime devono ricevere compassione e cura e i responsabili di questi mali devono essere portati davanti alla giustizia. E' una priorità urgente quella di promuovere un ambiente più sicuro e più sano, specialmente per i giovani". Queste parole erano state accompagnate però dalle polemiche per il mancato incontro con le vittime degli abusi. Alla fine il Papa ha deciso di accogliere le numerose richieste in questo senso.
In Australia le condanne per abusi sessuali di sacerdoti sono state 107 ma altri casi devono ancora essere giudicati.

The issue dominated all the time of the visit in Australia for the World Youth Days
SIDNEY - Before leaving Sydney, Benedetto XVI met a group representing the victims of
pedophile priests. The Pope celebrated this morning a mass in the presence of a group of persons who were sexually abused by the clergy, "he listened their stories and he consoled them, assuring his being spiritually near them".
"Assuring his spiritual vicinity - a note of the Vatican press room explains - he promised to continue praying for them, for their families and for all the victims". With that paternal gesture
- the note adds - the Holy Father wanted to show once more his solicitude towards those who
suffered from sexual abuses".
The meeting took place this morning at 7 a.m. Australian time in the chapel of the Cathedral
House where the Pope was lodged in these days. Four victims were present: two women and
two men, together with two assistants and the priest who accompanied them Benedetto XVI celebrated with the cardinal of Sidney George Pell, with the substitute secretary of State monsignor Fernando Filoni and with two secretaries.
At the end of the mass the guests were allowed to speak separately with the Pontiff , who said
"affectionate words of participation and comfort". The meeting ended a short time before 8 a.m. and " everything happened in a respectful climate, in spirituality and intense commotion".
The Vatican press release explains that "as it was already done in USA the Pope wished to meet some of the victims as a concrete gesture to express those feelings he had already
manifested many times during his interventions on the drama of the sexual abuses". In Australia he wished to do that after the conclusion of the World Youth Days, being that the reason for his trip".
The scandal of pedophilia in the church of Australia was in the background of Pope Ratzinger's trip. When he was in the plane, while flying towards Sydney, the Pontiff admonished that
" pedophilia was incompatible" with priesthood. And last Saturday, in front of the Australian clergy, he harshly condemned sexual abuses, defining them "misdeeds which constitute a grave betrayal of trust". "These misdeeds, he went on, must be condemned in the most unequivocal way. They have caused great pain and damaged the witnessing of the church. The victims must receive compassion and care and those responsible of these evils must be brought to justice. It's an urgent priority to promote a safer and sounder environment , especially for the youth". These words were accompanied however by the polemics about his not having already met with the victims of sexual abuses. In the end the Pope decided to
satisfy those requests.
In Australia the convictions for sexual abuses by the clergy have been 107 until now but many other cases are still waiting for the conclusion of the trial.
